"Further anaesthesia"

About: Queen Margaret Hospital / General Surgery

(as the patient),

I had all the literature beforehand and was informed that I would be having Entonox. The nurse who booked me in did not explain that I could ask for further anaesthetics if required. I told her my veins were bad due to previous medical treatment so she said she would ask the surgeon if I required one. When I got into the operating room a senior nurse noticed I didn't have a cannula inserted so she asked the surgeon to insert one. The doctor insisted that it was to be put into the right hand even though I told him I had treatment on that side. The doctor said it wasn't a problem and that I still could have it in the right hand. The theatre nurse spoke up for me and said the team involved in my other medical treatment would not be happy about that but the doctor still insisted that it was okay. I had to demand that the doctor put the cannula in the left hand. When the procedure became so painful that I could not carry on I was asked if I wanted it to stop but I was never asked if I wanted further anaesthesia, merely "why didn't I ask for anaesthesia at the start? "

Dear Pandrop

Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback on Patient Opinion.

I was sorry and concerned to read about your recent poor experience in our Endoscopy Unit. The doctor clearly did not listen to your concerns about the cannula and there was also an issue in the communication between the nursing and medical staff regarding the plan for further sedation and pain relief when you needed it.

I would be keen to speak to you further about your procedure. I would like to apologise to you in person and have the opportunity to look in to why this happened as there is definite learning here for us as a team. I would be grateful if you would contact me directly on 01592 643355 ext 20148.

I hope that you are feeling okay and I look forward to speaking with you

Kind regards

Gill Ogden

Dear Pandrop

Thank you for calling me this morning. I was disappointed to hear first hand about your recent poor experience in our Endoscopy Unit. Your care was not person centred and I am so sorry for the upset that this has caused you.

I have spoken to the charge nurse on duty today and she has reassured me that it is normal practice that our patients will be offered the choice between Entonox, sedation or, if brave enough, nothing at all to help them through their colonoscopy procedure. We will speak to all our staff today to make sure that they are clear about this and I will do a bit more investigating to understand why these options were not offered to you.

There are other aspects of your care that I agree were not acceptable and I will continue to look in to these and I will feedback to you directly.

I am grateful that you took the time to post on Patient Opinion. There is a lot of learning here for us which regrettably won't make your experience better but your comments have given us the opportunity to make things better for our patient's in the future.

Thanks again and I will speak to you soon

Kind regards

Gill
