" Leighton hospital urology problems"

About: Leighton Hospital / Urology

(as the patient),

My experience of trying to get help from Leighton hospital urology department for a very distressing problem has been pretty appalling to say the least.

1. Continuity of care seemed to be lacking

2. I felt I was consistently lied to

3. Appointments canceled at short notice (ie when you arrive at hospital)

4. on one occasion I was told I was not important.

5. Not offered treatments that are available

6. Errors in records

7. Being discharged when problem haven't been sorted particularly when you know more could have been done.

The only positive thing was that the nurses were very good and very empathetic and polite. In my opinion the consultant I saw was arrogant, rude and offered no choice in treatment and the trainee urologist didn't seem much better.

We are always sorry to hear that a patient has been dissatisfied with the service that we provide at Leighton Hospital. However, it is difficult to comment on an individual case without having more details. If you would like to share your experiences, so that we can learn from them, please do not hesitate to contact the Patient Advice and Liaison Service by telephoning 01270 612410. Alternatively, we can arrange for a member of the Patient Experience Team to meet you to undertake a patient “discovery” interview. This method has proved very helpful to patients in enabling them to talk anonymously and in detail about their experiences to someone independent of our service.

The Healthcare Commission has recently confirmed that Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Trust have improved their quality rating from ‘weak’ for 2005/06 to ‘good’ for 2006/07. We are particularly pleased that you found the nurses to be effective and sympathetic. The Modern Matron in Urology will discuss your experience with the Urology Team, and obtain wider feedback from patients by conducting a patient satisfaction survey in Urology in January 2008.

We are currently reviewing all outpatient services at Leighton Hospital and at the Victoria Infirmary in Northwich. This will enable us to improve services by reducing waiting times and providing clinics closer to patients’ homes at local GP surgeries. A Clinic Workload Co-ordinator has recently been appointed to Urology, to work closely with medical and nursing staff in reducing the number of clinics that are cancelled at short notice.

I am very pleased to read that you will be conducting a patient survey within the urology department at Leighton Hospital. I hope that this survey will be offered to all patients at the end of their treatment. This would enable the patient to give a fair and accurate account, without feeling intimidated by the consultant that has treated them.
