The hospital is looking a little shabby and clearly financial constraints are impacting on the fabric; however, the warmth and engagement of the frontline staff is undiminished. My granddaughter, who has both physical and learning disability, had a procedure on Monday 19 September. She is high risk for anaesthetic so we were anxious on arrival but the friendly and calming approach of staff was reassuring. The anaesthetist had clearly reviewed her medical history and took time to listen to her mum and give clear explanation of all that would happen, including timings. They covered all necessary clinical checks and discussions but then they even checked for my grandaughter's favourite character and had episodes of Peppa Pig loaded ready for her arrival to put her at ease. From the ward clerk, HCAs, nurses, anaesthetist, ODP and play specialist, we received nothing but kindness and professionalism, with genuine care shown throughout and consistently so. The final touch was a laughter intervention: balloon, guitar and a song including her name - a really lovely and unexpected bonus. The staff made for a really positive experience and we are very grateful for this.
