"I have no confidence or trust in the group practice"

About: South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw

(as the patient),

If I lived in a catchment area for another GP surgery, I'd change to them - I feel like my G.P practice must be amongst the worst GPS in the UK. Getting an appointment is almost impossible - they tell you to ring at 8am, which we do, wait 15-30 minutes on hold and when you finally get through theres no appointments left and are told to ring back at 8am the next day. If you're offered a 'triage call' you sometimes never get a call back. In my opinion the receptionists in the majority are rude, indifferent towards others and can be incompetent - over the years I've handed in documents and letters for them to get lost or go astray. There has also been many occasions where I've had samples - how can anyone lose urine and blood samples?

I recently attended for some holiday vaccination boosters - I arrived early and told the receptionist I was there and who I was etc to be booked in to see the nurse. After waiting 45 minutes I asked the receptionist how much longer I'd be waiting as I had a dental appointment to get to - she informed me that I'd not been 'checked in' so I had to wait another 30 minutes to see the nurse. The nurse only spoke to me three times:

1) they told me to 'sit there' and pointed at the stained chair

2) to ask me which booster I needed

3) after injecting me said I 'was done' and pointed to the door.

Also, the nurse did not clean or swab the injection site and after the injection they rubbed the area with their bare fingers - they never wore gloves, washed their hands or used alcohol rub.

I have no confidence or trust in the group practice. Over the years, I've been prescribed medicine that could have caused me harm, as it said it would have adverse reaction to and should not be prescribed to people with certain preexisting health condition, which I have. They've really let me down over the years. I've now joined a private group as this is one way I can at least attain some consistency and quality of care.

I support the organisation in making sure that the voice of patients and the public is heard and used in planning services. This involves running events, managing surveys, and building networks with the local community.

Dear Cadet 924

I'm sorry you've had such difficult experiences.

There may be a couple of things that we- or you - can do.

You could post here, or call or email me (helen.wyatt@rotherhamccg.nhs.uk; tel no 01709 302042), to let me know which GP practice you are talking about. I can this pass on the issues to the practice, while protecting your anonymity. We can then work with the GP practice to address these issues.

Also, if you would like to let me know your postcode, we can check which other practices might be convenient for you.

Alternatively, you could approach Healthwatch to pass on your concerns and to look for an alternative GP practice. Rotherham Healthwatch is based on the High street, their contact details are here http://healthwatchrotherham.org.uk

I hope this helps, but please get in touch if you would like any support to resolve these issues.

Helen
