"Team excellent, accommodation dismal"

About: Western General Hospital (Edinburgh)

(as a parent/guardian),

I recently attended an appointment with the CAMHS Team, located in D Block at Edinburgh's Western General Hospital, to discuss the results of an assessment of my son. I understand that the Team have recently relocated from their previous accommodation at the Victoria Hospital.

As always, the team members were excellent. They clearly explained the test results, what happens next and the types of support my son can access.

However, the accommodation in D Block is dismal. This is certainly not the kind of environment you would voluntarily take your child and I am pleased my son was not present on this occasion. I understand that this has been a recent move for the team, but surely the hospitals facilities team could have made an effort to provide a child friendly environment before the relocation.

The waiting room is awful, no pictures on the walls, no toys, no drawing facilities or books for kids and even wire mesh over the windows - something akin to a prison cell.

Come on NHS Lothian, get the finger out!

Good afternoon,

I am so sorry to hear about your visit to the CAMHS Team to discuss your son's assessment. Thank you for this lovely feedback about the team who will be delighted to hear this.

I have been in contact with the staff at the service as it sounds as the accommodation in D Block at Edinburgh's Western General Hospital is not as good as we would hope for the patients and their families who are attending this service. Your visit was during the first week after the move and although the staff had been preparing for the clinics they realised at the time they were short on furniture. The staff were quickly in discussion with Sick Kids Friends Foundation about this and they have got some new furniture for the clinic rooms and waiting area.

Thank you again for your feedback.

Kind regards

Jeannette
