My eye became painful, especially in strong light. I saw my GP immediatly, as I was about to travel to Brazil. She initially diagnosed conjunctivitis, but about 30 minutes later, after consulting her colleagues, she called me at home, recommended a visit to the opticians in case anything more serious was happening. The optician immediatrly observed a corneal ulcer, spoke to the consultant at the ENT Clinic in William Harvey Hospital, and within an hour I was being seen in the clinic. An aggressive course of antibiotic eyedrops was prescribed, that had an almost immediate effect. I was able to go to Brazil, and more importantly, my eyesight was saved, as I have now been given an all-clear on the infection. All involved - the GP, the optician, and the medical staff at William Harvey, deserve the highest praise for the speed and accuracy of their diagnoses.
