"My daughter"

About: Ipswich Hospital / General surgery Medway Maritime Hospital

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter was admitted via A/E recently .She arrived in the afternoon and was not seen for almost 9 hours by doctors they decided to admit her, a bed was not found till 3 hours after that. My daughter is unfortunately an IV drug user, now on a programme of methadone.

..her Left arm became very inflamed so she went to A/E, after a long wait the doctors decided she should be admitted with considering surgery for an oncoming abcess...She was given an IV of antibiotics, and kept in a single room, and totally ignored..Eventually I managed to talk to the ward sister who calmed her down..She was on IV for a few days and becos her obs were satisfactory she was discharged.

She came to me this week with a very swollen red arm.

My GP saw her arm in surgery o and referred her straight to the hopsital we spent 4 hrs in A/E, blood was taken, a line put in incase any drugs were needed.. Doctor saw my daughter and she was referred to the Surgical Assessment ward where she was admitted and surgery was performed to lance and pack the wound She was  discharged to me... They would not provide transport for her, even though she was groggy from the anaestheitc, oromorph for pain and methadone...

I had to pay for a taxi.

My beef with medway is, had she been properly looked after and not discharged the first time, her surgery would not have been an emergency ... They discharged her in severe pain.... with a bad infected arm...had my daughter left going to the hospital in Ipswich for surgery another week, she would have maybe lost her arm or died of septacaemia.

drug users, alcoholics, anorexics are all human beings..when I worked in healthcare I NEVER discriminated anyone, black, white, rich, poor, fat, slim, Jew, muslim, everyone was the same to me..I think todays NHS needs a good shake up....I think staff attitude to drug users needs to be improved.

Thank you for feed back on your experience with us, the majority of patients are expected to make their own home once discharged from Hospital. If you are not satisfied with the service that you received please give me a call on 01473 702101. I am pleased that we managed to treat your daughters arm and I hope she is making a swift recovery.

My general problem is with Medway Maritime hospital not Ipswich.

I am not interested in the majority of patients, I was interested in my daughter who had surgery the late night before

..I was told by a night nurse you would provide transport..The issue was solved. The following morning a staff nurse said she could be sent home in a taxi...for someone that was walking, why did the staff provide her with a wheelchair to the ground floor?

I was unable to return to the hospital myself,

I think the nurse just wanted my daughter out of the ward, because she was a IV user.. She is now on a programme

I suffer from back injury and could not manage another bus journey to escort her from hospital..

Thank you she is now still very dopey 3 days after her surgery, but is recovering in my care..

We would like to apologise that your daughter experienced a prolonged stay in the emergency department. There are occassions when demand exceeds capacity and patients unfortunately spend longer in the department waiting for admission to a ward.We agree that this is unacceptable and we are constantly reviewing patient pathways to ensure they are both safe and efficient. We provide the same care and treatment for all our patients regardless of their presentation or background.

If you would like to speak to Clare Hughes the Matron for ED then please contact the hospital on 01634 830000 and swithboard will bleep her.

Thank you for your feedback.

Utter rubbish, my daughter and her friend were admitted within hours of each other and both had the same negative treatment..my daughter had to wait 0ver 9 hrs the following day to get her methadone..and the only reason she got it, was because she pulled out her IV canula..

Her friend was left to soak in an infected bed full of blood and puss.for 5 hours after an abcess burst.....Subsequently, septicemia was contracted...I could carry on...so dont bother me with all the excuses you give..
