"Cataract surgery and intraocular lens implant"

About: St Mary's NHS Treatment Centre (Portsmouth)

I attended St Mary's Treatment Centre recently at 08.15 on a Monday, for a pre-operative assessment, that lasted over two hours,

It was extremely thorough, in terms of the numerous tests, and personal health checks, carried out on me, by a team of professional, efficient, and encouraging staff in the Ophthalmology Dept.

After their general assessment, I was given a thorough examination by a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, who encouraged me to ask any questions I had, then answered everything in a most helpful manner, and explained all the options, and possible risks, involved in eye surgery.

Before leaving the Centre, on completion of all the tests, I was told they would take me to one other office, where I would be offered a date for my required operation..

At this point, although I was eager to proceed, even my greatest expectations were exceeded, when I was told I could have surgery the next day.

I was the most fortunate recipient of a cancellation.

So it was, I found myself checking into the Centre again, mid-morning on Tuesday, being instructed to go to the surgical department on the first floor, and waiting only a short time, before being called, in preparation for my surgery.

I was shown to a private seating area, occupied only by me for the next 1.5 hours, and continuously attended by a designated nurse, who asked questions, checked my identity and paperwork, and dealt with the administration of all drops and medicines needed prior to my operation,

Finally the surgeon visited me, checked all the information again, marked-up my face as necessary for surgery, before I was conducted to the operating theatre for a 20 minute procedure.

Overall, this surgical experience was amazing, most efficiently carried out at all times in a calming manner around me,

I cannot praise highly enough, the staff in the Ophthalmology Department of the Centre.

My eye-sight was restored immediately after the operation, which was unbelievable for me.

Without hesitation, I would recommend St Mary's to any fellow sufferer, and would go so far as to say I consider the surgeon and staff have performed a miracle, so far as I am concerned.

Words are not enough to express my sincere thanks to all concerned,

S.B.
