"Dreadful Care Ward B6 PCH"

It has taken me some time to write this review, in March 2016 a family member had been given the sad news he had only 1 week to live.

I feel the hospital as a whole failed my family member late diagnosis after attending the hospital for numouros tests. In early March after another A&E admission we found ourselves on ward B6. Initially the care was satisfactory until my family member started to deteriorate quickly.

I feel education is needed on this ward on care at End Of Life moving a patient who is in pain to weigh them is unforgivable and then proceeding on using a hoist when they were in too much pain to move and shouting out.

I challenged the staff but was informed they had a box to tick!

As a family member I found this distressing to say the least. Over the next few days things didn't get any better, I ask if a referral could be done to SALT as I was concerned about my family members unsafe swallow again I was informed he was ok.

I will praise one young Staff Nurse who's care of our family member was excellent, I always felt happy when they were on shift. In fact the next day I raised my concern about swallow and they had already referred that day why could that not have been done the day previous. We as a family had asked to be referred to Thorpe Hall Hospice for End Of Life Care we were told the referral had been done in fact after checking with the Palliative Care Team it had not , meaning a further delay in much needed specialist care.

As our family member continued to deteriate pain management was not titrated daily. Seeing a member of your family rolling and moaning in pain was extremely distressing and should not happen if care is mangaged properly. It took myself and my husband to ask for a doctor to assess our family member and titrate his medication accordingly. In fact the doctor questioned a member of staff in our presence as some pain relief had not been given that afternoon. Basic nusing care such as mouth care was not done I had to ask a senior nurse for water and swabs so I could administer mouth care myself all very much basic nursing care! It was touch and go but we finally got moved out of that dreadful ward and into Thorpe Hall. Sadly our family member died later that day

thanks to the hospice with dignity and pain free! Education all the way for ward B6!
