"Remarkable in patient experience ward 1"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Trauma & Orthopaedics (Wards 1 & 5)

(as the patient),

I was admitted for a total knee replacment the following day. I recieved a warm welcome into the ward and this helped eased anxieties before surgery. I had attended the joint scholl in prpeperation and was given information about anaesthetics choice of general or spinal. I was really anxious about the spinal but also very anxious about recovery afterwards. I decided that I need to at least give the spinal a go but still had reservation, this was my first experience, When I arrived at theatre I was greeted by the anaesthetic Nurse and the consultant anaesthetist Duncan who were both amazing. The listened to my anxieties and gave me the information again to help me make the right decision, there was a instant trust and I felt able to choose the spinal. I have to say this is one of the best decisions I have ever made. The benefits after the operation were feeling alert, good pain relief, able to mobilise quickly and in fact be discharged home with confidence 3 days after surgery. This is very much more that I expected and has been a remarkable experience. The other thing that helped a great deal was being in a bed bay with other people sharing the same experience. We were all very determined to do our best to get moving and were able to support each other to keep going during the wee ups an downs. Thank youvery much to the surgeon Miss McGlynn for my new knee and thank you to all the staff for giving such good care, You are all remarkable too

Dear Nifty nanny,

Thank you for your very positive feedback, I am so pleased that you found our elective programme of ERAS (Early Recovery After Surgery) such a good experience.

We have developed this system to enhance the patient journey, working in tandem with you to ensure a speedy recovery.

I was especially pleased to read of the reassurance and excellent communication you had from all our team from the Joint School through surgery to the hospital Ward 1 stay.

We are currently mid trial with having our elective patients together to help encourage each other through their recovery and I am very pleased you also found this a positive experience.

I hope your recovery is progressing well, and will pass on your kind comments to all staff involved in this journey.

Kind Regards

Gwen
