I had a kidney infection (nephritis) and was admitted to Rotherham D. G. I think I stayed on wards B1 and B4, but I'm not sure because of illness. The nursing staff were brilliant 24 hours a day. Nothing was too much trouble for them. I would like to thank the blood department for thier continual and speedy response whenever my body rejected the cannulas. Congratulations for day and night treatment, I feel they saved my life! However, I think that the consideration for the patient by senior medical staff could have been better. I was embarrassed at one point during my stay. I object to having an internal exam at 8.30am when my breakfast was on the table, by my consultant, with 2 male nurses present. I was not in a fit state to complain due to the illness and high temperature. I was admitted with nephritis and rigors and a temperature of 40 degrees. I cannot remember anything after getting into the ambulance. This was on a Tuesday and I don't remember anything until the Thursday. I had been hallucinating and telling the staff to clean up skeletons and skulls from on and around my bed! I was on a drip but because of allergies to two antibiotics they could not source the one which was compatible from anywhere in the area!!! They eventually came up with another one, through Microbiologe which carried a 10% chance of my being allergic. That was not the case. It worked but I felt so ill I did not care by then. I can only thank the nursing staff, from the bottom of my heart. With regard to the incident I described earlier, I think that the consultant was well out of order, and I intend to tell him so, when next at the outpatients clinic. I feel that it was not fair on either myself or the others in the ward. I am not a prude, I am a pensioner, so know what life is about. But there is a time and a place, and I feel he should have had more consideration and respect for all the patients. We are their living - not pieces of meat !
