In Spetember 2009 I attended the Women's and Children's Hospital for a sterilisation procedure. The consultant and nursing staff were lovely and looked after me very well. The procedure also went went.
My only concern was how I was spoken to on the reception when I attended that morning. Looking back I wish I had spoken to someone about it on the day but I felt a bit stupid about it.
When I attended the person on the reception (who just looked like a security guard, with no sign saying patients should speak to them) was deep in conversation with another member of staff, and didn't speak to me when I hesitated at the desk, as I was unsure where to go to be booked in. As I felt I needed to look for someone else I walked on. Realising that the hospital was not officially open for 'office hours' (as it was approx. 7.45am) and no other staff where around I walked back to the person on the reception.
The receptionist gave me quite a sarcastic remark using a tone I didn't like, and then laughed at me. As I was feeling nervous I didn't respond and just went to where they had redirected me. The comments made me feel foolish as I didn't find it obvious that I should have spoken to that person. This person had no idea why I was being admitted into hospital had no right to make any sort of comment the way they did. It made me feel like I was putting them out.
Luckily the rest of the staff etc were great as previously mentioned but I feel that if they'd been like that with me, they could do it to someone vulnerable. In a normal situation I would have questioned this manner but as I was nervous I left feeling like an idiot thanks to this person, and said nothing.
I hope, if they still work there, that there attitude changes.
