What could be improved
The on call psychiatrist was both unhelpful & unsympathetic. Respect & sympathy should be shown to the family concerned. The suggestion that the patient should return home was not appropriate. As the patient was suffering with severe dementia, he was very confused and showing signs of violence. The suggestion that the patient should be driven to the next hospital by car similarly was not appropriate as he had already struck out at his son that night in the hospital. In addition after the aptient was transferred, the correct patient notes should have been sent across to Epsom Hospital. This was incompetent.
Anything else?
Time should have been taken to review the patient's case history and understand the circumstances under which the patient had been admitted by the emergency services. The patient was very disturbed & had recently lost his wife who had been the primary carer. It has been a difficult time for the family. We hope this does not happen to anyone else.
