"Yes, I am a nurse, but a mum first"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / General Surgery (Ward 5)

(as a parent/guardian),

My 16 year old daughter was admitted recently. She has never been an inpatient and was not happy to be on her own. By the time we got to ward 6 I was unsure of what to do.

Yes she is an adult but she's also my baby girl. Yes I am a nurse but a mum first and foremost. Yes she wants to be independent but she looked so vulnerable. I only briefly mentioned my concerns to SN Allison and before I knew it your staff in ward 6 instinctively knew what we needed. Your HCSW Emma had us all sorted with a big comfy chair and into a side room. Nothing was a bother for any of the staff right throughout her stay till next day. That was probably the best sleep she had in ages cause her mum was there even though she wouldn't admit to it.

We didn't get any other different treatment from anyone else on the ward but what it did do was open my eyes to how we do sometimes forget we are treating people and not conditions.

To that I am eternally grateful to all the staff in ward 6. Thank You so much.

Dear Nurse eye opener,

I have to admit to being quite emotional just now when reading your account of the excellent person centered nursing care both your daughter and yourself received in Ward 6.

Staff strive to create an environment of comfort which can be very difficult as Hospitals are such an alien place for most patients and relatives.

I'm delighted the journey you both took through our Hospital and in particular Ward 6 was with care, compassion and understanding. I will personally pass your thanks to the Ward and in particular to Allison and Emma.

I hope your daughter is recovering and thank you again for taking the time to give our staff the emotional boost they deserve.

Kind regards

Gwen
