"Smoking outside the kitchen at Wishaw general"

About: University Hospital Wishaw

(as the patient),

It is very off putting to be walking past a kitchen and to smell the cigarettes the patients are smoking outside the window. It is disgusting and the environmental health should be notified.

as if it is not bad enough to have to walk through the doors to be engulfed in a fog of nicotine now our food has to be trained also.

Dear Mrman

I am sorry to hear of your experience when visiting the hospital. NHS Lanarkshire takes smoking in the grounds seriously and in addition to the signs we have put in place we continue to communicate the No Smoking Policy amongst staff, patients and visitors in order to improve compliance.

Those who are breaching the policy are in the minority though it has been recognised that without legislation it is difficult for hospital staff to enforce, therefore Scottish Parliament are considering the proposal to make it an offence and enforceable.

I understand your frustration, but I’m glad you took the time to share your experience. Feedback like yours helps as it raises awareness with the public which we hope will help us to change people’s attitude and behaviour to smoking on hospital grounds.

Thank you for getting in touch.

Kind regards

Yvonne Ross
