I had a growth caused by the retained male parts from my fetal development, I was told. It is called Gartner's cyst, and affects about 1% of women. This caused sexual problems and it had to be removed surgically.
I met two gynaecologists, one wonderful, other not so wonderful.
Gynaecologist number one told me I had to have a scan involving my bowel and another of dye contrast in the blood. I was most concerned but fortunately for me the senior radiographer cancelled these invasive tests and sent me for an MRI.
Then I met gynaecologist number 2 who was kind and informative. This doctor said that this cyst is not typically near the bowel wall but on the side and that the operation was a short one. The MRI gave the doctor all the information necessary.
I had a 20 minute operation in the day surgery unit and all was well. The doctor was caring and competent and I had complete trust. I shudder at the idea of those painful embarassing and entirely avoidable tests ordered by doctor number one.
