"Not allowed my test results - against the law??"

About: Dewi Sant Hospital / General Medicine

(as the patient),

Hi all

Im in Wales UK and as part of taking an active role in my health, I have all copies of test results for blood counts, liver and thyroid going back to 2004, but got them from GP surgery

I decided to ask for these because I was not told when my liver enzymes were abnormal, if I had been, I would have been motivated and encouraged to lose weight and take better care of myself in order to improve them. I didnt know until 2009 that there were abnormalities, so thats five years lost from my being able to self help. In my book this is plain wrong.

I had a first gastro app at Dewi Sant hospital in Pontypridd, and was given blood test slip to be tested at my surgery. Did that. When I rang the hospital and asked the secretary of the consultant for a copy of my results I was told I am not allowed to have them.

I thought I had a legal right to them?

When pressed I was told I can ask my GP to write in and request them to be sent to her, and then I in turn must request them from her, but thats so much trouble and time wasting for a busy Dr and I cant see it working.

Does anyone know the law please?

Dear CaroleH You'll find summaries of the law on the Department of Health web site and also on NHS Choices. We hope this is helpful.
