"Bad hygiene practice by staff"

About: Southmead Hospital

Ward 32A - Witnessed nurses entering "infection control" bay, not washing hands on entering or exiting and not wearing gloves or aprons, yet family members expected to wear aprons on visiting.

Ward 32A - now closed due to "rampant" Norovirus infection.

Family members not told about closure until 11am (visiting from 10am).

Witnessed patients left in bed until 11am with curtains drawn, breakfast still on tray and no nurses with them.

Dementia patients will suffer as no family can visit, mild dementia patients need family around them, this can cause a deterioration in their recovery.

Cannot give patient name due to fear of retaliation or further lack of care.

Dear Anonymous - I was sorry to read of your poor experience in relation to Gate 32A at Southmead Hospital. Please be assured this matter has been reported to the Infection Control Team and the Medical Directorate Head of Nursing so appropraite action can be taken. It is of course of the utmost importance that infection control procedures are followed by all staff, who receive regular training in this respect, and I cannot explain why the normal procedures were not followed. However, I apologise if the reasons where not explained at the time and that this has obviously caused you and your family concern.

In general the Trust has seen significant improvements in our infection control figures, which are reported to NHS England on a regular basis.

I also regret that you felt that raising this issue directly with staff was not an option, due to "fear of retaliation or further lack of care". North Bristol Trust welcomes complaints and carer's comments as they provide an important source of information to allow us to improve our services. Staff at all levels are aware of this and are encouraged to report any issues they also witness as part of the open culture within the organisation aimed at maximising learning and improvements.
