"My mother's poor care in A&E"

About: The Tunbridge Wells Hospital / A&E and trauma unit

(as a carer),

Just under a month ago I called the NHS line for advice about my mother suffering in the middle of the night with severe abdominal pains so much she was screaming, vomiting and on the floor.

An ambulance was sent for her and she was taken to A&E at around 11pm - 12am. Things went downhill from there when the poor ambulance staff were left attending my mother in the corridor because no nurse could find a separate bed other than the one for the ambulance. After an hour or so a reasonably clean bed came through. We were left in the corridor which 3 other crying women near the A&E entrance with no privacy at all for 4 hours. It took nearly 3 hours for someone to give my mum a name bracelet.

What concerns me most is that my mother laid there after having morphine being sick, and then a nurse who spoke very bad and broken english came out to inject more into my mother despite me telling her to read the notes that says no more morphine at all. She stood there for 20-30 mins arguing with me until I spoke to a doctor passing through who confirmed I was correct after checking the front page of my mother's notes.

The same nurse came out at around the 3 and a half - 4 hour mark to say that she needed to take blood or a doctor wouldn't see her. I was furious that this was not done hours ago.

We were left in the corridor following this until the early hours the next morning when finally a doctor could see us.

Overall, my mother had no privacy, no covers, there were machines left out by the same nurse, not connected to anybody making horrific noises for 4 hours (and I asked other nurses who kept turning them off before the same nurse came out and kept turning it on for no reason at all). I felt the care was a joke and the nurse called my mother the wrong name as well, whilst holding the morphine my mother was not supposed to have.

A nurse put my mother's health in danger and I am beyond disappointed.

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback about your mother's recent visit to Accident and Emergency at Tunbridge Wells Hospital.

We were concerned to read about the confusion over your mother's medication and would like the opportunity to discuss this further. Please contact the PALS office at mtw-tr.palsoffice@nhs.net should you wish us to investigate. With kind regards, the PALS team
