"Some concerns about Russell's hall C2"

About: Russells Hall Hospital / Paediatric surgery

(as a parent/guardian),

They were short staffed beyond belief whilst we were there in early March.

The nurse looking after us told us she was an 'adult' trained nurse and not a children's nurse but that she had been sent to the ward to work because of it being short staffed.

Although she was really nice, It worried me because I thought only children's nurses should care for children? Maybe I'm wrong.

Also is it right to have starved your child for surgery to be told at very short notice it is cancelled because of this ward being understaffed.

The play therapists were good.

I wasn't told about the sensory room and considering my child has ASD it would have been beneficial for him to use this room to relax in.

I just feel disappointed in general.

Thank you for your comments about our children’s ward. Safety is always our top priority and if a shortfall is identified on any ward, we will utilise staff already on site at that time. This may mean moving staff between wards. On the rare occasion that adult nurses are required to undertake a shift on the children’s ward to ensure safety, they are always supervised by the specialist children’s nurses who are on duty.

Although we do our best to ensure surgery goes ahead as planned, there are occasions when this is not possible and a procedure needs to be cancelled at short notice. We do appreciate how frustrating and inconvenient this can be, especially for our younger patients and for parents who have to arrange time off work. We know this is far from ideal and so please accept our apologies.

The sensory room is a beneficial addition to the children on C2 and we are disappointed that it was not made available during your visit. Your comments have been passed on to the matron in charge and she will speak to the play therapists to ensure they let parents know about the sensory room.

We would like to assure you that we take all comments seriously and act upon them as part of our on-going commitment to improving patient experience.
