"Childrens A/E"

About: Queen Elizabeth Hospital (London)

Dirty waiting room area with cardboard used sick bowls tissues etc under seating and on seating, We was with a 2 day baby that only needed a heel blood test for jaundice and to be ask to sit in that area with sick children vomiting was unacceptable, we complained and was moved to a cubicle to wait to see a Dr. Five hours later we were seen and the blood test was taken, another hour to wait for the results and the baby was borderline to be treated and we were told to come back the following day to hippo ward at 11am. After 3 hours a repeat blood test was taken another hour for the results and was told she was borderline again and no treatment needed. In total 11hours out of 24 hours was spent in the qe for 2 blood tests on a 2 day old baby. a total disgrace.

Your comments have been passed to us by the Trusts Patient Experience Team. We are very sorry to learn that your experience of attending the Paediatric Emergency Department at Woolwich hospital was not of the standard that we endeavour to offer.

I would like to address the points you raised below:

Firstly the dirty waiting area - the waiting area is cleaned twice daily and in - between these times the nursing staff endeavour to keep the waiting area clean and tidy. Unfortunately, with such a large volume of patients passing through the waiting, occasionally the standard of cleanliness in this area can drop below the desired standard. We are aiming to increase the number of times this area is cleaned.

Secondly the length of time you had to wait.

On arrival in the emergency department each child is assessed and they are prioritised according to their needs and condition. Due to the age of your baby they were referred directly to the paediatric team, but the paediatric team where extremely busy. We have recently invested in a new hand held scanner that will mean the heel prick blood tests will not be needed and can be completed by a nurse, hopefully helping to reduce such long waits for families.

Again, we are extremely sorry that you and your child did not have a good experience when attending the emergency department. Please accept our sincere apologies.
