I was referred to Woodthorpe from Lincoln for a hip replacement op. All of the staff were lovely but the consultant was a massive let down. They came across extremely arrogant and uncaring and implied that I wasn't in enough pain as I was able to move my hip inwards when they examined me. I have been suffering with pain for the last 6 years, having had physio, pain block injections and been told that I have no cartilage left and bone rubbing on bone and have finally been diagnosed in Lincoln as needing a full hip replacement but this was dismissed almost immediately by them. They hadn't read my notes before I arrived and seemed shocked at my age, I'm 50. As I am able to cut my own toe nails, that seemed to absolutely be the deciding factor for them that they weren't going to carry out the op despite the fact that I struggle to walk, get dressed, drive and carry out daily activities. I felt extremely humiliated after seeing this consultant and would suggest that patients see the consultant before having all the pre-op tests done to save wasting everbodys time. It would also be a good idea if they read the patients notes before they arrived!

Dear Patient

Thank you for much for the time to provide feedback following your visit to Woodthorpe and thank you for you very kind comments regarding the staff, I will certainly pass these on.

We have been support United Lincoln Hospitals NHS Trust with patients who have been waiting a long time for surgery and like yourself many have chosen to come to Woodthorpe Hospital. The patients from Lincoln are all already listed for surgery and we committed to provide their operations by the end of March, much sooner than they would have received the care and treatment they require in Lincoln.

I did speak with your Consultant on the day you visited as he shared with me your disappointment during the Consultation. The Consultant did not agree with the decision to undertake surgery, which due to the risks involved should always be the last option and considered very carefully. The Consultant, of over 12 years, who is very experienced is of the firm view that more conservative treatments should be explored further to relieve you of your pain and symptoms and surgery was not indicated at this time.

Rather than patients attend clinic to see the Consultant, then return to see the Physiotherapist, then a further visit for a Pre-Operative Assessment, we do try and manage these steps all in one visit to save the patient travelling, especially as you were coming from Lincoln. As you had already been listed for surgery the Pre-Operative Assessment would appear appropriate, I am however sorry that with hindsight this was not required.

I am sorry that on this occasion you were unhappy with the service you received, it’s important that patients do feedback and tell us where we can improve and I’ll certainly look at how this situation can be avoided in the future.
