I have been in hospital on a number of occasions now as I suffer with chronic abdo pain. Together with the pain team I have a variety of pain killers and have tried a number of antiemetics both at home and as an inpatient. I know now what meds are required to help me get well and go home to my family.
Yesterday I was brought to the LRI ED. I have been vomiting for 48hrs and have not been able to keep my medication in. I was in excruitiating pain as well as feeling increasingly unwell. In A&E I was dealt with efficiently giving me IV cyclizine as this works quickly and highly effectively for me and morphine to help with the pain - this was excellent. Then I was told I would be transferred to ward 8! Although the Triage room was empty I was put in a small consultation room/ office and left in there for 5 hours. Thankfully my mum had come with me and after a few hours begged them to get me some pain relief. I was in more pain now as the was nowhere sufficient to sit or lie as this was not set up for patients. I was then suprised when what I assume was a timer kicked in and the door locked electronically. I was a little upset by this point as I was now in effect locked in pain in a storage cupboard with a desk - making A&E feel like a hotel.
The final straw was after midnight - I had been in such a lot if pain but was limited to treatment as I was vomiting anything that went in orally. I was due another cyclizine around 1am but reminded the nurse at 12:30am as I desperate to be able take other meds to help me. An hour later they said you can take it orally or as an injection. Well I couldn't take it orally and I'd previously had a skin reaction to the IM method but this was never a problem usually as I was always given it through a cannula for quick relief and so I could begin to self medicate! For some unknown reason last night they decided I could not have this! I was a little confused as to why as it has been a lifeline to me on numerous occasions.
I asked to speak to the doctor ie changing the route - I had not slept for over 24 hrs either and needed to get to bed. I was told under no circumstance would the doctor speak to me about it. When I asked well what shall I do the nurse shrugged their shoulders, I said well shall I just go home then. To this they said well your not getting it, you can sign a form and go.
Sadly I was so let down and ill I left which I have never done before!
