"My Hip Operation after an accident"

I fell badly on ice and broke my left hip. It was the most pain I have ever experienced.

The ambulance arrived in around five minutes with the paramedics calming me down with gas and air reminding me of my daughters birth.

I was seen quickly by Mr. Howie orthopaedic surgery and a strategy put in place. I am 62 but made it clear I intended to continue working for several more years and as such rather than repair a new ceramic joint would be fitted. The operation took place that afternoon and seems to be have been a complete success. There is a long way to go of course but hopefully will be back at work sooner rather than later.

I realise this sounds a little bizarre but I found the whole experience an eye opener in so many ways and even life enhancing. I am an estate agent and tell my staff it is not about the houses, it is about the people. This maxim is highlighted by everyone concerned in my care. From the cleaners to the consultant it was obvious that they cared for everyone without any kind of prejudice or indeed without passing judgment.

Mr Howie exudes confidence and I was at ease with what was about to take place. Please forgive me; I am getting older and don't remember names very well so if not mentioned just assume a positive view on my part.

I have to mention Colin triage A&E who was calmness personified, then absolutely everyone in ward 15. Names I can remember are Kenny, Ray, Tracy, Liz, Jaquie, Rose, Lorna and others. I have to make a special mention of Shannen who I assumed was about 25 or so due to her obvious maturity with a level of care that belied her true age. She had just turned 20 years old and what a terrific example she is of our sometimes much maligned young people. An old gentleman of 96 was particularly difficult but she dealt with him with a gentle firmness as well as with a caring that exceeded my expectations. I am so happy to have ended up in ward 15.
