"In the best possible hands"

About: University Hospital Monklands / Ear, Nose & Throat (Ward 9)

(as the patient),

I had Thyroid Cancer resulting in a laryngectomy 16 months ago. The care and support I received from the Monklands Ward 9 Team and their support staff was exceptional and I was soon well enough to be sent home.

When I had sufficiently recovered from the surgery, I was fitted with a speech valve between my airway and gullet which gave me the wonderful power of speech back. In reality this allowed me to participate in life, in much the same way that I did before the surgery.

The speech valve needs to be replaced every couple of months and it is during these "Pit Stops" at the Ward Nine clinic for a replacement part, that I witness the professionalism of the very special teams who work there. I consider myself young, and when I see the care and support that is given, in particular, the more elderly and frail patients on the ward, it really makes me realise how fortunate we are to have these people, who are all dedicated to helping us through such traumatic times.

Anyone who needs to receive treatment on this ward should know beforehand that they are in the best hands possible and will always get the care and support that they need.

Ward 9 Teams ..... Please keep up the amazing work.
