"Recovering from a brain injury"

About: Dirrans Centre North Ayrshire Council

(as a service user),

I was assaulted three and a half years ago, resulting in a double fracture of the skull and a significant trauma to the brain. I unfortunately was lost in the system, so to speak, and never received any proper follow on treatment. After 3 years and my personal life falling apart, I was reffered to the Dirrans Centre through the social work department after having serious suicidal tendancies because I couldn't cope.

The centre saved my life. The staff became a support service which helped me deal with all aspects of my life from diet to housing. They helped wake me in the morning, organised appointments and reminded me when it was time to go. They spoke to the housing department frequently as I found them extremely difficult to communicate with. They provided me with a counselling service which has been infinitely more effective than the psychological service through the NHS. I was introduced to a number of other service users with similar but varying issues. This showed me that I was not alone and brought on new friendships which helped my social skills.

I have used all that The Dirrans Centre has given me to find a life of my own. I am leaving the council area (North Ayrshire) as after nine months of being homeless, and no progress in sight, I can no longer wait for a home. However, I believe I will be moving to a better and happier place.

Dear Ondo,

Thank you for taking the time to share your story.

I know how difficult it is when you have a brain injury to find the right help at the right time. It can be difficult to know where to turn to for assistance and it is often frustrating trying to deal with different services.

The Dirrans Centre specialises in helping people move on with their lives following brain injury, stroke and long term conditions and helps them to cope with everyday tasks and life events. We are delighted that you have found our service helpful, especially the person centred counselling, which has been extremely valuable to many of our service users.

We all wish you well with your new life in the north of Scotland.

Good luck!
