My PSA levels began to rise slowly over several years and I was referred to Causeway Hospital for further investigation. My GP had conducted a DRE which was negative and another was performed when I first went to the hospital, again negative.
The care I received at all times was excellent. I had a first biopsy in 2014 with Mr Subin which showed some very low level cancer and watchful waiting was decided upon. This consists of a PSA test every 3 months followed by a second biopsy around 1 year -18 months later in this case with Mr Safar. Results were the same so the intervals of PSA tests reverted to 6 month intervals with a review after each to monitor the situation.
I have the highest praise for both specialists and all staff connected with the Urology unit. I hear there is talk of moving some Urology services to Altnagelvin. Personally, I would not be in favour of this, not least because it means a considerable extra distance for the whole Glens and North Coast area to reach those services, especially bearing in mind the fact that many concerned would be elderly.
I believe the North East part of this country needs the Causeway Hospital to keep its range of services intact and that that should remain a priority and savings should be sought elsewhere.
