"Care in the community is only good if people are well enough to be there."

About: Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust / Adult mental health (inpatient)

(as a staff member posting for a carer/relative),

This story has been posted on Patient Opinion as requested by a carer who does not have a personal e mail address. These words are her own.

''When my son was at Heather Close it was amazing. The atmosphere was so relaxed and it felt like being in your own home. My son has now been transferred to a locked secure unit at Bracken House and it feels like my son is locked in prison! He is not doing very well, he has gone backwards in his recovery and gone into himself.

I want to see the Trust stop closing these places down when they helped my son so much. they keep saying they are putting more help in the community but they haven't offered anything near where I live in Worksop for my son. It is difficult to get my son transferred near home to a suitable place where we can be together and not travel so far. I feel completely helpless, my son is very very vulnerable and he is not safe to be in the community. Why is the Trust doing this? . I don't know how I have got through the last eleven years. A weight has been lifted off me recently via Andrea, at Bassettlaw Carers Group who has been there to talk to me and told me to contact different people to help me.

Care in the community is only good if people are well enough to be there. What happens to him when he isn't well enough?

Thank you so very much for taking the time to give us your feedback, we really appreciate this. I am really pleased you are finding benefit from the Bassetlaw Carer Support Group, I will ensure staff involved are given your feedback. Also, it is lovely to hear your experiences at Heather Close were so positive, again I will ensure staff are made aware of your comments. I will also ask the manager to respond with regards to your question:"Care in the community is only good if people are well enough to be there. What happens to him when he isn't well enough?". We can only celebrate successes and look what we can do differently when feedback is given to us, so once again thank you so very much. Look forward to seeing you at the Group again soon.

Thank you for your feedback, we value this. I am so pleased to hear your very positive experiences with Heather Close. I will ensure all the staff involved hear your thoughts. I am sorry to hear the move for your son has been difficult. If you would like to give me a ring on 01623 404611, I would be more than happy to arrange a mutually agreeable date, time and venue for us to meet up and discuss this further. I will also pass on your comments to my manager. I am not sure if you are aware that we have a carers family and friends evening every 3rd Wednesday of the month, the next one is on Wednesday 21st October at 6.30pm to 8pm where carers are invited to meet and have support in thier own journey of the mental health services. You are more than welcome to come along, this is usually facilitated by our occupational therapist. I look forward to speaking with you soon.
