My 92 yr old mother in law saw a consultant earlier this year and was informed that she required laser treatment to correct her deteriorating eyesight in both eyes. She was informed that this would be done within 3 months. Over four months later she had not received an appointment. I visited the Eye Hospital and was told that they have been experiencing further delays. I was given an appointment for her for later on this month. A wait of 6 months. Today she received a letter stating that this date for laser is now cancelled. There was no explanation of why this has happened. I telephoned the department to be informed that there is a further delay due to capacity issues. I was given a further appointment for over a month after the canceled appointment.
Of course there is no assurance that this will go ahead. I have recently attended the HEYHospNHSTrust AGM and understand from Mr Long Chief Executive that beds capacity is an issue and the plan is to keep people in their homes and avoid unnecessary admissions. My mother in law lives alone and is fully independent, reading is her main pastime her capacity to maintain this level of function is severely compromised by this lengthy delay in treatment.
