"87 year old man with diabetes and Altsiemers medication taken away"

About: Barnsley PCT

(as the patient),

Hi,I have been a carer for my father for the last 13 years.I am really angry about the way he has been treated since being diagnosed with diabetis. My father is 87 years old has C.O.P.D,Diabetes and Altzheimer's.Since my dad was diagnosed with diabetis last September we have had only one visit from a diabetic nurse. My father has only had one blood test by the district nurse. My father was also supposed to get a visit from a dietition but noone has been and when I asked at my local g.p surgery I was told there was little chance my father would get a visit from a dietition.

I carried on testing my fathers blood twice a day and we were managing quite well on our own until two months ago when we were told we would no longer be able to get the prescription for my fathers lancets and tests strips and if we wanted to test him we would have to buy them ourselves. Our G.P said as long has my father eats a well balanced diet and takes his medication he does not need to be tested. My complaint is how am I supposed to make an 87 year old man with Altsiemers eat a blanced diet.My father just won`t - he gets angry and upset because he dosen`t understand.I get carer's allowance and a bit of income support and my dad gets his pension. After working more than 37 years down the coal mine you would have thought he would have earned his perscriptions but no now we have to struggle to buy them and they aren`t cheap.
