"Other patients in A&E can be scary - Northern General Hosptial "

About: Northern General Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

When I had my accident and broke my wrist on a Sunday afternoon I was taken to a&e and I was in a lot of distress. First I had an x-ray and then I had to have my wrist bone fixed into place and I was there for 5 and a half hours waiting in agony, after all this time I was told I could go home and come back in 2 days later for an operation, so when I asked at the desk how I would get home they told me to get a taxi. By this time I was in distress and i went to the waiting room by myself and was met by a riot of people shouting and drinking and I was trembling by that time. One of these people was very nasty telling what to do and I couldn't even hear the taxi people as they were all shouting so loud. By the time the taxi came I was in a terrible state, it really scared me as I was on my own and I think I should have been helped more. I am 74 years old and I have never been as scared as I was that night.

On the Huntsman the staff made sure I was not in a lot of pain, and made sure I was feeling comfortable and tried their best to make me feel at ease whilst being away from home. However more help is needed for elderly people who couldn't eat their meals properly without help and help is needed for patients getting dressed when you have only one hand to use - this is still a problem for me at home on my own with no help.

I think it is very embarrassing for women having to use the same toilet as men on mixed wards and we all complained about that.

I would like to thank all the medical group on ward 4, Huntsman for their kindness and caring attention.
