"Disappointed with doctors hygiene"

About: Grantham & District Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

I attended the Accident and Emergency Department of Grantham Hospital due to experiencing throat closure from allergic reaction. It had calmed down by the time I was assessed by the Nurse, who was lovely.

I waited a further 30 mins to be seen by a Doctor, which was a perfectly acceptable time. However the Doctor constantly sniffed with deep lung power and finally wiped his nose on the palm of his hand. I was horrified.

He then proceded to collect a flat wooden stick from outside the bay. He was in my sight at all times. I watched to see whether he sanitised his hands but he didn't. He asked me to open my mouth and looked in my throat but said he couldn't help as it had gone down.

I was satisfied that he couldn't do anything as I am currently under investigation with my GP regarding this, but the example of hygiene was appalling.

Dear Rubydooby

Thank you for your feedback and we are very concerned by your observations whilst in A&E.. Clearly this breaks every policy in the trust regarding infection control and hygiene standards. I have spoken to the senior management in A&E and they have asked if you could please contact me as they need to identify the doctor concerned. I can be contacted directly on 01476 464560 or Sharon.kidd@ulh.nhs.uk

Dear rubydooby

Thank you so much for calling me. I just wanted to give you an update following our conservation. The A&E consultant has spoken to the doctor involved in your care and he was mortified when he was told what you had seen. I met with the doctor and the A&E consultant today and he asked that I pass on his utmost sincere apologies to you. He has been a doctor for many years and he said that hand washing is an automatic reflex when treating patients but he can't recall any exact details when he treated you.

Also I wanted to update you that following your comments, we are about to commence spot check hand washing audits across the hospital to reinforce the importance and necessity of hand hygiene to all staff when they are dealing with patients.

Regards

Sharon
