"10 week waiting list for my daughter"

About: Royal Hospital for Sick Children (Yorkhill) / Ear, Nose & Throat

(as a parent/guardian),

My 8 years old daughter has been suffering of a constant dizziness for more than 5 weeks.

After have visited our local surgery 4 times and seen 3 different doctors, the last doctor has URGENTLY referred my daughter to a Paediatrician at Yorkhill. However, the Yorkhill Paediatrician has decided that her case is not urgent and put her in a 10 week waiting list.

How can I now explain to my 8yrs old after more than 5 weeks of discomfort that she need to wait another 10 weeks minimum to be seen by a paediatrician? ? ?

I feel this should not happen!

Response from Lorna Fairlie, Patient Experience, Public Involvement Project Manager, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde

Dear Cristina,

First of all, I am really sorry that you have not had a response to your story before now - this was passed on to the managers of this service at the time, however it is only now that I'm reviewing previous stories that I realised you hadn't had a response.

I would hope that by now your daughter has had her appointment and that all is well, but if there are any further issues with this please do not hesitate to get in touch with me directly on lorna.gray@ggc.scot.nhs.uk.

Coral Brady who is the Business Manager for Paediatric Services wanted to provide the following information about how referrals are managed, for you or for anyone else who may be reading this:

"Our clinical staff are expertly trained to assess referral documentation from GPs. When they receive this documentation, they categorise the referrals as either urgent or routine. A routine appointment will be within 10 weeks.

If the clinical information provided by your GP has been assessed as routine, and if you feel this is wrong, then please do get in touch with your GP and ask him to contact the doctor he referred you to, with any relevant additional information.

I hope you will agree that only by checking referrals and assessing them against all other patients needs can we fairly appoint patients in a clinical priority order.

Sorry for the distress this has caused and hope this advice helps."

Again, if there is anything further I can help with, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Best Wishes,
