I was diagnosed with DCIS just over two years ago. It was a horrible shock and I needed extensive surgery - a mastectomy and reconstruction - which took a long time to fully recover from.
But I was and remain so grateful to all of the kind, compassionate and incredibly skilful people at the Western General who looked after me. The consultant, Oliver Young, took me through the whole process with real patience, sensitivity and exactly the right amount of humour. I am also grateful to Cameron Raine, who operated on me along with Mr Young, and to Laura McGuire, whose artistry with the tattoo pen put the cherry on the cake!
The whole team, in fact, were great. I felt very well cared for, and in the best possible hands.
My GPs at Leith Mount surgery have also been very good - both in getting me to the clinic ASAP when I showed up reporting a very slight change to the shape of one of my breasts, and in looking after me after the operation. I'm very grateful to them, too.
"Outstanding care at the Western General breast unit"
