I had an overnight stay at Papworth Sleep clinic for tests on sleep apnea and respiratory failure. I have been to Papworth for a few day clinics over the same issue and have always found them to be excellent however the night study and overnight stay took it to a different league of care. For the record, I hate hospitals. I feel trapped, enclosed and generally really dislike them. The thought of staying overnight for me is torture. Anyway, daytime was fine for me, had various tests all of which were positive. The staff made me feel welcome. After a short wait I was told what was happening. Ward notes and consultant notes varied a bit to start with but this was sorted quickly so I knew what was going on. Unfortunately as the night came closer I started to become panicked. I wanted to discharge myself. My wife was unable to talk me around but as the night time beeps and machines come alive things got worse for me. My wife went to talk to the charge nurse who quickly came over to reassure me but at the same time said they were supportive of any decision I made. Of course they talked me around on medical advice and I remained for the night. The night time was unpleasant as it was noisy and I struggled to sleep but I had a good six hours. Through the night I wore a cpap machine for the first time which made things a bit worse however the staff were really supportive and helpful in many areas of getting the machine right. The food was rather nice, in fact the tomato soup was some of the best I have ever tried. Because of my displeasure of hospitals my wife was told she could stay as long as she needed even if this meant she was there until I went asleep which was over and above. Anyway I should not go on, a really special place. Food hot and tasty. Staff supportive and friendly, expert care and treatment.
