As a child and now adult with learning disabilities and physical disabilities I have worn a splint on my leg and each time a new splint was made a new patern followed. But as I reached adulthood and moved to adult services for orthopedic services I took one look at the so plain boring white plastic splints and I thought kids shouldn't have all the fun adults should have fun too so I have made it my goal every time I get a new splint I ask for butterflies on my day splint and a space theme on my night splint they will usually say yes but if you want the patern you have to say.
I believe for adults you are going to have that splint for 7 or more years and you want to find joy in wearing your splint. It should be like getting a pair of shoes you should be shown a patern or colour catalogue to make a choice. Life should be fun and healthy. Not dull and full of stress. Most of the time when I have asked the member of staff, they have been nice, open and honest about my choice and not been nasty.
Although it's not always been great I had two members of staff who were unhelpful and didn't meet my needs, but I have had good experiences as well.
I am getting measured for a new day and night splint soon I hope it goes well and that my needs are met and listened to.
