"I feel my discharge could've been better"

I broke my ankle at the end of March whilst on holiday in Bluestone. Bluestone first aiders and Welsh Ambulance were brilliant. I was taken to minors initially at Withybush and after being triaged sent for X-ray. Coming out of X-ray I was met by Diana, one of the Orthopedic Drs who told me I'd broken by tibia and fibula and dislocated my ankle. She put me at ease and took control of my care.

I was transferred to Majors and Rescus to have my ankle reset. The IV drugs were good as I don't recall my anke being reset but was aware afterwards of being in a temporary cast and being back in X-ray. I was admitted to Ward 1 the same day and had emergency ORIF surgery the same day. The ward and theatre staff were lovely though very busy at times.

I feel my discharge could have been better. I was told to find my own transport home and wasn't given a home assessment despite living alone and being non weight bearing. And although sent home with pre filled injections to prevent clots when I got back to Cardiff the District nurses couldn't supervise me initially as I had no drugs chart nor sharps bin.

I have since found out that Welsh Ambulance do transfer patients all over the UK, so think I should have at least been offered a non emergency ambulance home. First couple of days I was very low. I phoned the GP but was in tears when they said they couldn't help me as I wasn't ill. Being non weight bearing and recovering from surgery I had to arrange my own home assessment with Social Services and luckily from that started having assistance with personal care about 10 days after coming out of hospital.

My time in hospital I'd give 8/10, but my discharge I'd give 3/10.
