"Radiology Visit - children's area"

About: Leeds General Infirmary

My daughter was referred for an ultrasound scan and we attended LGI Radiology department (in Clarendon Wing). The appointment letter provided plenty of information about the test although as we had not attended the Radiology Suite before we found it to be poorly signposted and a long way from the entrance we had come in from (on Great George Street). The receptionist was pleasant and we were seen promptly by a radiologist who introduced themselves by name, and then the consultant who also gave their name. Both provided plenty of opportunity to ask questions and offered suitable information. My daughter was included in the discussion and they took time to ensure she understood and felt comfortable with asking questions. It would be worth noting that this was the 2nd appointment we had to attend. The referral was not dealt with effectively on the first pass (we're guessing that it wasn't read through and criteria for dealing with children referred to the service was missed). As a result we had an unnecessary, additional visit to Wharfedale Radiology department 3 weeks earlier. Generally (we were told) they do not see children at Wharfedale and as a consequence the scan requested was inappropriate, they agreed that alternative scans would be suitable which resulting in a more appropriate scan being carried out. However, possibly as a result of their lack of expertise and nervousness around managing a 'paediatric' patient they could not class the scan as complete and advised us that a further scan would be offered. While my time and expense is peripheral to this referral the poor management of the GP referral resulted in additional time off work (and school) along with the cost of travel and parking, not to mention the waste of staff time and effort booking and then re-booking appointments. Ultimately one of these appointments could have been offered to someone else and in an NHS where funds and deadlines are tight this felt like a waste of resource.

Dear Ammartini, Thank you for taking the time to write to us. I am very sorry that you have had to attend an appointment that was inadequate for your daughter’s needs and thus wasting time and resources, I understand that this can be very frustrating and for that please accept my sincerest apologies. I have passed your post onto our radiology department so that they can address the issues raised and learn lessons from your experience I have also passed your post onto our facilities management team so that they can address the poor signage. I am however very happy to read that your daughter now has attended an appointment that was suitable and that you had a pleasant experience with all staff that you came into contact with. With kind regards Rosie Senior Nurse Patient Experience
