After being admitted to A&E with a broken hip on Thursday 23 April, my mother is still in Ward 9 of HRI awaiting surgery. She was told she'd be going down on Friday, then Saturday, then yesterday, and finally told she was first on the list this morning. Again her surgery was cancelled this morning. Today we had an reason/excuse - lack of anaesthetists. For the past three days we have had no explanation. My mother is 89 years old and has been nil by mouth for three days running - yesterday until 5pm. Now she has cystitis and her leg/knee is badly swollen. Not only has she been waiting four days for surgery, she has not been visited by a doctor since she left A&E on Thursday evening. Her leg was put in traction by a nurse and was completely ineffective. Another nurse redid it on Saturday so that her leg is straighter. We have little confidence that the surgery will happen tomorrow and no confidence whatsoever in the coordination/communication skills of the staff. The nurses are pleasant and probably efficient but they are working in a system that does not work. As far as the surgeon is concerned my mother is not on his list because she's a trauma patient and their list is for 'planned' surgery. Despite that he is apparently the one going to carry out her surgery! We will be submitting a formal complaint but how does that help my mother now?
