Over the past year I have been experiencing severe pain in my stomach and been admitted to hospitals around Manchester several times, (one stay resulting in having my appendix taken out), a doctor then referred me on to have a colonoscopy. I was given Moviprep as my bowel prep, which didn't work at all, it only caused pain and vomiting for days.
I was never told prior to the procedure that there could be pain, only mild discomfort during the procedure. I was in agony all the way through the procedure where I begged the consultant to stop due to the pain I was experiencing, I had to ask at least five times before the procedure was actually stopped.
I think that patients having a colonoscopy should be made aware that it could be extremely painful, and that consultants should stop the procedure when the patient asks.
I felt the whole experience was traumatic. I will never have a colonoscopy under sedation again, currently waiting for an appointment to have one under GA.
