During a visit to Tameside A&E over an infection, I was first told by the A&E Reg on site that I would need IV antibiotics overnight. Being a clinical professional I stated this was not the case and Oral antibiotics were needed. Having refused the insertion of a cannula given its uneccessary use - I overheard nursing staff stating 'he's being awkward and refusing the cannula'. I was not being awkward but expressing my wish not to have a cannula and challenged the clinical judgement as to why it was required. This was highly unprofessional of the nursing staff - to which the NMC will be contacted.
With regards the A&E Dr I was seen by - he called for a member of the Ortho team to assess my infection - their advice and comments were as follows: 'you need a course of oral antibiotics which should help clear it up, and a visit to the GP to arrange for a referral, I dont know why you were advised IV antibiotics'. Not only did the original Dr not answer my question surrounding clinical judgement, but wanted to pursue a course of treatment not necessary, as proven by the specialty Dr. Absolute shambles of a visit but all credit must go to the young Reg from Ortho who saw me over the issue.
