About: Highbury Hospital

(as a relative),

Not my first story about Highbury....but whilst the bad practice continues I will also continue to report it. You never know, eventually it might lead to changes.

Attended a review meeting today and thought all staff attending bar one were professional and respectful. The member of staff who I thought was abrupt and at times rude is meant to be my relative's key worker. This worries me.

Who wants to hear their relative described as sinister? Who wants to hear about their shy and very private relative being locked out of their room? Etc etc......

Hi there

I am very sorry to hear about your experience. This is not something that we expect to happen on our wards. We take the importance of carers input very seriously and I am concerned that you have left the ward feeling this way. In the first instance can I invite you to discuss this with the Team/ Ward Manager.

Hello and thank-you for your response.

Yes, I am still very upset and shocked by what I heard by this particular member of staff. Their attitude was terrible.

My relative has been completely misrepresented and stigmatised by the person who is responsible for co-ordinating the care. The key worker has not made contact with the family at all but seems to think that they know all they need to know. They drew up a 'care plan' which was basically a list of risks.

After complaining, this has now been changed, but goodness knows what is in it now. My relative's voice has not been heard and nor has the family's.

I hasten to add that all other staff at the meeting were pleasant and professional. I am however, very concerned about how this key worker relates to my relative, given their views. I immediately reported my concerns to a lovely student nurse after the meeting. I also spoke to the ward manager later, who said he will investigate....not sure however if anything will come out of this?

It does seem that staff can say what they want without any repercussions? Hopefully, I am wrong.
