"Infection control"

About: Dr Gray's Hospital / General Medicine

(as a friend),

Did a DATIX get completed by a member of staff re serious complaint made about appalling breaches of infection control and administration of medicines during visiting time?

The member of staff was as shocked as I was when I described what had happened and said it would be dealt with, but as my name and address were not taken, I have no way of knowing if a DATIX was completed (legally it should have been regardless of the complaint being verbal, to ensure learning from something that should not have happened in the first place).

It was very apparent that there was no nurse taking a management role in the absence of the ward sister.

Overall the staff were empathetic, caring, kind and helpful. BUT such basic and appalling breaches in infection control and similar are leaving this lovely ward open to having serious infection .. especially as it is a surgical ward. My main concern is that the issues are sorted, that a DATIX is done so the things I spoke to the member of staff about are learned from...

Thank you.

I have a team of Inspectors who inspect hospitals in Scotland. We check that hospitals are meeting National Standards and we are independent of Scottish Government and NHS Health Boards we inspect. We have members of the public working with us as volunteers and they come on inspections with us to bring a patient and public view to all our work.

Than you for posting your concerns about serious breaches of infection control at Dr Grays hospital.

I take all concerns about cleanliness hygiene and infection control raised by the public seriously, and I've noted your posting.

Thank you

Dear friend

Thank you for taking the time to provide this feedback and thank you also for your positive comments about our staff.

It is extremely concerning that you have witnessed poor compliance with standard infection prevention and control procedures. I would hope that if you made a verbal complaint that this has been dealt with appropriately and if what you witnessed was considered to be an "incident" then yes, we would expect to see it recorded on our incident management sysytem.

In order for us to follow this up and ensure that the loop has been closed, learning has ensued and been shared I would be very grateful if you felt able to contact me directly.

We aim for the highest possible standards in infection prevention and control and would welcome the opportunity to make improvements based on what you have witnessed.

I can be contected by telephone on 01224 558449 or on email loldroyd@nhs.net
