My daughter started vomiting recently and when she was still being Ill on Wednesday morning I called our GP to be told there were no appointments so I called 111 who advised my daughter needed to see a doctor and to request this from the surgery. I called the surgery to be told they have half day on a Wednesday and so a GP would call me to advise next steps!
The GP called and advised to go direct to A&E or call an ambulance. We headed to A&E in Medway Maritime Hospital.
We were booked in and taken to the paed area. Obs were fine and a deteriorate fluid challenge given.
We sat in the waiting room and carried out the challenge, I also breastfed my daughter as she is fed on demand and she was tired so wanted the comfort.
We then saw the pediatrician who examined my daughter and I confirmed she was sick after each feed, the pediatrician then asked if she was vomiting my milk and I confirmed.
She then advised me to NOT feed her for 12 hours and to only give dioralyte as my milk was irritating her tummy and making it worse.
I instantly didn't feel comfortable with this as breastmilk has the antibodies needed for babies and when I expressed my concerns about her comfort I was advised to use a dummy!
We were told should she be sick within that 12 hours to return immediately as she'd need an iv fluid drip.
We got home and I was concerned about the advise given so I contacted my local BFN breastfeeding peer supporter. Meanwhile my baby was so upset she was close to being sick so I decided to breastfeed her which instantly calmed her.
I continued to feed on demand and offered the dioralyte in between. She was sick again 3 times in quick succession so we went back to A&E and onto Penguin AU where she developed a rash.
We saw another pediatrician who advised she has viral gastroenteritis and to keep up the fluids milk and dioralyte and monitor her for dehydration.
I have since done some research and asked other breastfeeders and no one has ever heard of being advised to withhold breast milk. And even the NHS advise to continue feeding: http: //www. staffordshireandstokeontrent. nhs. uk/services/advice-for-breastfeeding-mums. htm
In essence I was given incorrect information and was given information for a formula fed baby as the advice is to avoid dairy as it is an irritant. Human milk is not dairy.
