I was referred to a CBT practitioner via my GP. I had experienced a devastating workplace issue that had resulted in long term sickness absence with stress. I had many reservations around accepting 'mind therapies' although I am myself a therapist but the practitioner quickly put me at my ease. She was warm, friendly and in no way made me feel judged or wrong for feeling the way I did. I was suffering symptoms of overwhelming anxiety, something I'd never experienced before but working with her made me realise my reactions had come from issues from my childhood where I'd learnt how to protect myself from low self esteem and insecurity. My experience of CBT was challenging and at times upsetting but the practitioner paced my sessions to build in 'thinking time' to take in what we had uncovered which worked perfectly for me. To anyone considering CBT or any other mind therapy but isnt sure or feels you may be labelled, I'd say please give it a try. Modern day treatments are very different from those of previous eras and it may just make the big difference you are hoping for.
Thanks to my therapist for her time and patience. You have set me on the road to recovery
