(as the patient),

I had firstly been offered the mesh at Ayr hospital in May 2014. I was not happy with the doctor at Ayr hospital who was very arrogant and not willing to discuss any other alternatives. As a result I asked to be removed from this patient list.

This was my best decision to make as I had the operation carried out yesterday by Dr Agur and his team at Crosshouse Hospital Kilmarnock.

I would highly recommend Dr Agur and his team for his wonderful manner and skill as a surgeon.

I had my surgery and went to the ward with a catheter, which was removed at 7am this morning. I have not needed any pain relief and would hardly know that I had had surgery 24 hours ago.

I would highly recommend this alternative method to mesh and would recommend Crosshouse Hospital for five star treatment from start to finish

Thank you for your reply and good wishes. However my my husband and I have been on a long journey to get me to where I am now. The doctor I saw at Ayr hospital was one of the most arrogant doctors I have ever come across who failed to attend two of my clinic appointments. During my last appointment the doctor sat chewing gum throughout the consultation and refused to discuss anything other than mesh or bulking agent.

I had done my own research on the various procedures with laparoscopic colposuspention being my preferred choice. This I was told was not possible.

If patients are to have choices then all consultants should know what they are, as well as being specialised in their own area.

Thanks for taking the time to share the positive part and I am so glad your overall experience of care with us has been favourable. I'm sure all practitioners involved in your care will be delighted to read your post.

I am glad you felt that you had made a good decision. It is important that patients know all about surgical alternatives and the local personal experience; including numbers of procedures performed and the adverse event rates. It’s OK to ask! Indeed, the recent booklet from the Scottish Government, mentioned by Prof White in related responses, (http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Resource/0045/00453999.pdf) encourages patients to ask surgeons about their workload and outcomes. Well-informed patients are as important to their own good outcome as well-informed doctors.

Thank you for raising awareness of an important alternative to mesh surgery. The team in Ayrshire & Arran feels great by helping to alleviate some of the current anxiety and by being able to offer an alternative to our patients. We appreciate you letting us know your experience.

Treatment options were recently changed by the Government with new procedures starting and some being stopped (temporarily) because of the recent problems. Our Multi-Disciplinary Team meeting agreed the current choices based on the Government Guidelines. New national guidance will be issued next year and our local arrangements will be updated accordingly.

I agree entirely that patients and staff should be informed about treatment options and the pros and cons associated with them. Well-informed patients are in best position to choose what is best for them. Updated information on all alternatives can be found on the NHS Choices web: www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Incontinence-urinary/Pages/treatmentoptions.aspx.

The recent booklet from the Scottish Government Expert Group (web-link above) is currently being updated to include more details about alternative treatment options, surgical and non-surgical.

I had this operation as the keyhole surgery did not work. This surgery has also not worked!

You are very aware by day 2-3 if it has been unsuccessful.

I phoned my surgeon day 6 after surgery and had no response?

I am at the depths of despair as I succumbed to the menapause age 38 and feel I am not being treated fairly? My friends will maybe 10 years later than me experiencing this
