Went into unit after 8 hours labour, and was advised no pain relief was available until I was at least 4cm dilated. Had a machine strapped (not very well, as it kept falling off) to my stomach which was supposed to monitor my contractions.
After a few hours, advised that contractions were stronger, and requested some paracetamol. This was refused as the machine told her my contractions were no stronger! My request to be examined again was refused. Waited again until pain was severe and I told her it felt like I needed to push, and requested some paracetamol. Midwife rolled her eyes and went to get some. Requested I be examined again and she finally relented. At this point she discovered I was, in fact, fully dilated, and it was now too late for anything other than entonox. Due to the uncontrolled birth I had to have a spinal anaesthetic and go to theatre afterwards. The examination by the surgeon prior to the surgery was carried out with no pain relief and he refused to stop the examination when asked. Due to the anaesthetic I then had no choice but to stay overnight. I had no food, and some water that was out of reach.
Every time my baby needed changing I had to call for assistance and was treated like an inconvenience. I also had no sleep. Even if I went into labour on their doorstep, I would rather travel to another hospital than give birth at Exeter again.
"total lack of care or consideration"
