"Northern General - Firth 3 then Huntsman 5 - For Hip replacement."

About: Northern General Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

Consultation - The consultant and registrar looked at the xray and explained everything to me. They wanted to give me a blood transfusion, but couldn't due to my mastectomy, so there was a delay. Anything I didn't understand was explained to me.

The Operation - I was referred by my GP for an operation. The operation went very well, Mr Douglas who performed it was excellent and so was his registrar.

The Ward - Was rushed, but the staff very efficient. On the whole the communication was very good.

The day after the operation the nurses turned me, and my bad leg dropped causing me a lot of pain. They didn't even apologise, they almost blamed me for it happening. The very same day I asked for a bed pan - it took 2 hours for it to come.

Physio - They got me out of bed only for 15 minutes, then I asked to be put back to bed. It took them 2 hours to help me back to bed. I was very angry with the nurse, but she was very nice to me.

Day Nurses - Many of them were male and confrontational. I was very angry that many people on the ward were making demands and getting everything. Demanding patients got what they wanted whilst others who kept quiet were neglected. But to be honest I think the nurses just forgot, it was a very busy ward. The technical side of nursing was very good. The atmosphere was very rushed , I didn't mind that, because the nursing was so good. I had to wait a long time.

Afterwards I was quick to get up and about, its hard when you are dependant on others.

Discharge - Was a bit confusing. The parking was also difficult. Advice was given by occupational therapy and physio. My medication wasn't ready, but the wait wasn't long.

Aftercare - The district nurse came round to my house, very organised.
