My husband is a university educated, erudite and intelligent human being. He is also a paraplegic who over the years has learnt to look after his various problems extremely well. He is being treated for what the medical team insist is a pressure sore and what our French hospital say was an old abscess. Whatever it is, or was, no one is prepared to listen to what my husbands symptoms were prior to hospitalization. Patronisingly, they group all paraplegics into one group, obviously considered unable to care for themselves and recognise the signs of a pressure sore starting. It is short sighted and arrogant and I consider negligent in the extreme. He has always made sure he never stays in one position for long, has followed all the instructions given to him to avoid pressure sores and has had no serious problems in the thirty years I have known him. He just wants to get to his specialist spinal injury unit in Oswestry, where hopefully they will be able to treat him successfully after listening to what he has to say.
"When will doctors learn to listen to the patient?"
