I have had the frightening experience of having a major heart attack while on my own at 2:00am - what a shock!
I am fit (because I always get regular exercise) and in my 50s with controlled blood pressure, not overweight due to a very healthy diet and have always been a non-smoker. So why did it happen? Stress at work is the only factor I can think of, so I was a bit of a wreck when the ambulance crew arrived.
And how they went into action taking everything in their stride. I was tended to for 15 mins in the ambulance before it set off so that they could stabalise me In the A&E the staff whirled into action and I received emergency angioplasty and stent.
The care and attention I received will stay with me forever. I am so grateful to all the staff from the professors to the cleaners and tea makers, particularly the nurses. When I hear all the horror stories about what is happening in the NHS my story is all the more remarkable because I never once felt neglected or ill treated. Indeed I was treated with the utmost respect and never once felt I lost my dignity.
Where is this truly wonderful place? The Northern General Hospital in Sheffield.
